Healthy Learners has been serving the students of Dillon since the fall of 2005 and began operating in Georgetown in early January 2009. The program serves elementary, middle and high school students in Georgetown and Dillion County School Districts who lack adequate access to health care. In response to increased deaths by suicide in Georgetown county, Healthy Learners is training teachers, school counselors, and community leaders in Youth Mental Health First Aid in 2019. We expanded to begin serving Marion County in 2021. The program serves elementary, middle and high school students who lack adequate access to health care. In 2019, Healthy Learners piloted mass vision and hearing screenings for students in Dillon County. Since this pilot, we have done vision, dental, and hearing screenings in partnership with libraries, summer camps, and school districts in Dillon and Marion counties. This proactive approach allows us to identify children with health barriers to learning, then provide access to the health care that they need to thrive in school. Healthy Learners is continuing to use this screen, refer, serve strategy to expand our reach and impact into other rural counties in the Pee Dee.
