Vision Restored…

What can seem like a simple issue, like struggling to see the smart board, could actually be a warning sign of something much more serious affecting a child’s health.
Aaron sat at his desk, his eyes squinting in frustration as the smart board seemed to blur before him. The numbers and letters twisted into an unintelligible haze, making it nearly impossible for him to keep up with the rest of the class. His teacher quickly noticed that Aaron was falling behind, often showing signs of disappointment and withdrawal. Despite trying different strategies, such as moving him closer to the board, he continued to have difficulties in the classroom.
After weeks of observing Aaron struggle, the teacher reached out to Julie, the school nurse, for help. A routine vision screening revealed the cause of his trouble: Aaron’s vision was 20/150, far below the standard for normal vision. Understanding that this was a serious barrier to his learning, the school nurse immediately contacted Healthy Learners.
Merlethia Greene, a Student Services Site Coordinator at Healthy Learners collaborated with Tiesha, Aaron’s mother, to arrange an appointment with an eye doctor and transportation to his visit. At the appointment, Aaron was fitted for glasses that would finally allow him to see clearly.
Five years later…
During a routine eye check-up, Dr. Adams made an alarming discovery: a retinal hemorrhage in Aaron’s eye. This was a potentially serious condition, one that could be linked to underlying high blood pressure. While Dr. Adams was able to treat the immediate infection in Aaron’s eyes, he knew this wasn’t the whole picture.
Dr. Adams called Tiesha, to explain the findings and the importance of following up with blood tests.
Tiesha, already juggling a hectic work schedule, felt overwhelmed. But Merlethia stepped in again. Thankfully Aaron’s blood tests came back normal, and his vision returned to full health. Tiesha felt a wave of gratitude and relief wash over her. Merlethia had been an advocate for her son’s health and success in the classroom not just once, but through multiple seasons of his life.
“Healthy Learners didn’t just help with Aaron’s eyesight—they were there for us every step of the way. I honestly don’t know how we would’ve managed without their support.” – Tiesha
