Seeing Success…

For Latasha Walker and her children, Tuesdays are all about two things: Fortnite and tacos. It's a night filled with friendly competition, laughter, and plenty of cheese—one of the kids' favorite taco toppings. But while their fun traditions have brought joy and connection this year, the Walkers have also faced a number of challenges.

In 2022, the Walker family relocated from Alabama to South Carolina, seeking a fresh start. Arriving in Marlboro County without friends or family for support, Latasha faced the challenges of rebuilding their lives alone. Yet, with unwavering determination, she remained committed to providing her children a better future and new opportunities.

Kaden loves playing Fortnite!

Latasha first realized her son, Jamari needed help when he started experiencing blurred vision. Whether watching TV or playing football, everything seemed out of focus. His performance began to suffer – both in the classroom and on the football field. Concerned about how this impacted his confidence and daily life, Latasha knew she had to find a way to get him the care he needed. However, scheduling and transportation to appointments were challenging for a single mom with a job and three other children to care for.

Latasha heard about Healthy Learners through information sent home from Jamari's school. Curious to learn more, she spoke with the school nurse, explored their website, and completed a consent form to start the process. Jessica Look, a Student Services Coordinator at Healthy Learners, quickly contacted Latasha, coordinated his vision appointment, transported him to care, and picked up his glasses the next week and delivered them to his school.  Jessica kept Latasha informed every step of the way.

Jamari is excited to try out for baseball this spring.

And it wasn't just Jamari—other members of the Walker family, including Aaliyah, Kaden, and their youngest brother, Malik, have also faced health challenges that Healthy Learners has helped with. Recently, Jessica has helped the youngest, Malik, with his speech therapy appointments to assure he receives the support he needs to develop his communication skills.

Latasha has witnessed significant progress in her children's education. Aaliyah, Jamari, Kaden, and Malik have excelled in school, consistently made the honor roll, and adapted well to their new community. Thanks to our donors, Jamari received the eye care he needed, which boosted his confidence, improved his academic performance, and has also made noticeable progress on the football field. Now, he's feeling more confident than ever and is excited to try out for baseball this spring.
