It is with mixed emotions that Healthy Learners shares with you the news of Cindy Poole’s “early” retirement in mid June due to health issues. Cindy’s work at Healthy Learners has allowed her to do what she loves … work in the arena of school health to help children receive the care they needed to be successful in school. “It has been an immeasurable blessing to have been a part of a faith based ministry for almost twenty years. However, now it is time for me to shift my focus from work to my family and to my health and healing,” said Poole, director of programs and assistant executive director of Healthy Learners.

Dee Dee Chewning presented Poole with the Dee Dee Chewning Healing Award at Poole’s drop-in on June 15. The criteria for the selection of the recipient of the Dee Dee Chewning Healing Award is someone who exemplifies the mission and ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine and Healthy Learners, gives selflessly of his/her time, talents, and energy in making Healthy Learners successful by supporting the goals and objectives as outlined in the Strategic Plan, provides direct care to the children served by Healthy Learners (i.e., a provider, school nurse, staff person), and acts as a representative of and spokesperson for Healthy Learners in order to enhance community awareness and the building of a foundation of friends and supporters. Last, but not least, the recipient exhibits sincere commitment and dedication to Healthy Learners by being dependable and available and demonstrates a willingness to “go above and beyond” on behalf of the children Healthy Learners serve.  Cindy has met all of the above criteria on a regular basis and is certainly deserving of the award.

Poole stated, “The ministry we provide to school age children in the Midlands is unlike any other and it is through many partnerships that we are successful. We are the ‘safety net’ for many children who are in need and without the resources, whatever those may be to access appropriate care. I sincerely thank all those who partner with us to make a difference in the lives of these children.”

On behalf of the Board and staff of Healthy Learners we collectively say it has been a privilege to work with Cindy and she has been an invaluable asset to the mission and ministry of Healthy Learners.
