"Chores for Change"
Students at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Columbia showed their support for Healthy Learners Midlands by implementing a "Chores for Change" project during a five week period in the last quarter of 2011. Healthy Learners Midlands Friends member, Danielle Gadow coordinated this community service project with Lisa Leonard, school counselor at St. Joseph's. A kick off assembly was held and Cindy Poole, Midlands Coordinator explained to the students how the money they would earn for chores performed at home could help support other students who were in need of glasses or medication or other health services. A large poster size thermometer was presented to the school to help identify specific ways that Healthy Learners would use their donations to meet children's needs. The students at St. Joseph's were very excited to have the chance to help other students like themselves and over $500 was raised. This project was a service opportunity for the students at St. Joseph's but also served to educate their parents about Healthy Learners services to students in need in our local community. Students received a blue Healthy Learners wristband (graciously donated by Wilbur Smith) to thank them for their participation in the "Chores for Change" project.
