Healthy Learners

School is in session!

The new school year has begun for children all across South Carolina and while this is an exciting time, many of them will be without the necessary tools to be successful. Students who are in need of eye exams or dental care or those whose families can not afford to pay for their medicine because of a lack of health coverage are at a distinct disadvantage when compared to those who have the ability to access proper health care.

The mission of Healthy Learners is to remove health barriers to learning and in 144 schools across 10 school districts, Healthy Learners provides vision care, dental care, hearing evaluations, clinical counseling, visits to a pediatrician or nurse practitioner and/or assistance with prescription medications for uninsured and underinsured students. Transportation to and from health care appointments is a vital link in successfully meeting the child's health need. Access to health care along with coordination of care in partnership with school nurses ensures that the student has what he or she needs not only to be healthy but to also perform at their very best in school.

The staff of Healthy Learners welcomes students, school nurses, teachers and other staff back to school for 2010-2011 and anticipates another successful year of meeting the  needs of children who fall "between the cracks" of the health care system and who are in need of assistance. Healthy Learners could use your support in continuing this ministry - please consider making a donation to Healthy Learners today and share in our mission to remove health barriers to learning for SC's children. Thank you!
