Healthy Learners

Golf Tournament

This year's presenting sponsors, M.B. Kahn Construction Company, AFLAC and Hole in One Sponsor, Jim Hudson helped sponsor one of the largest charity golf tournaments in the Midlands, the 12th Annual George Younginer Memorial Golf Tournament.  The golf tournament was held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Fort Jackson Golf Club, Columbia, SC.  More than 200 golfers played to help hundreds of children all across South Carolina with health care services like vision care, dental care, and hearing evaluations. Co-Chairs for this statewide event were Matthew Roberts, Member, Nexsen Pruet, LLC & Healthy Learners Board of Trustees and Judy Davis, CLO, EVP, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

Ray Tanner, University of South Carolina National Champions Head Baseball Coach was named the first Champion for Healthy Learners.  Tanner's award was presented by Matt Shaffer, Chair, Healthy Learners Board of Trustees and Senior Vice President at BlueCross BlueShield of SC.  Shaffer stated that Tanner's life's work is about creating champions and advocating for children who are economically and medically disadvantaged. Tanner is a champion for all young people on and off the baseball field.

Tanner's values, determination and commitment to helping children in need are in total alignment with the Healthy Learners mission and vision.  Tanner presented Healthy Learners with a $7,500 Check from The Ray Tanner Foundation in order to support their mission.

The golf tournament included a WIS-TV Putting Contest with Tanner, Rick Henry, WIS-TV Sports Anchor and Dawn Staley, USC Women's Head Basketball Coach.  Music was provided by the Conder Elementary All Star Steel Band and Billy Sloan sponsored by Tombo's Grill.

Healthy Learners thanks the golf committee members, Board members, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, the more than 50 volunteers, staff, WIS-TV, Clear Channel Radio, donors and sponsors.
